Pilates is a system of movement exercise originally developed by Joseph Pilates

The focus of Pilates exercise is the control of the limbs from core connection.  There are various pieces of equipment used in Pilates that provide resistance.  The primary purpose of the equipment is to facilitate your ability to feel connection in your body that you can take out into all of your activities in the world.  I studied Pilates with Long Beach Dance Conditioning, a program focused on rehabilitative therapy.  I incorporate Pilates exercises as part of my comprehensive therapeutic approach.

Similar to physical therapy in its specificity and physicality, somatic movement therapy is differentiated by its focus on mindful participation.  Motion and emotion and are intimately connected:  I will empower you to feel and participate in your healing so that you can enjoy the process and renew your motivation for self-care.  We all want to be healthier in our bodies.  The intrinsic motivation to act on this desire arises when you can actually feel the difference and enjoy the path that gets you there.  I am a Registered Somatic Movement Therapist through ISMETA, the International Somatic Movement Education and Therapy Association.  My particular Somatic Movement Therapy lineage is as a Certified Laban Movement Analyst (CLMA).

The basis of Authentic Movement, pioneered by Mary Whitehouse, Joan Chodorow, and Janet Adler, is the differentiation of mover and witness

Unlike performance, however, neither person has any agenda.  The mover moves in any way they like, usually with eyes closed.  The witness stays mindfully present.  Afterward there is generally some verbal reflection on the experience, traditionally in the first-person present tense.  This way of speaking supports the meaning making process as belonging to each individual, and not a property of the movement itself.  The process can be quite insightful and therapeutic, deconstructing layers of somatic experience for both mover and witness.

Like a language system for movement, LMA offers a theoretic underpinning for how we comprehend, construct, and make meaning with our bodies in space.  Irmgard Bartenieff was a student of Laban’s who particularly expanded the functional and expressive embodiment of the teachings.  I am a Certified Laban Movement Analyst (CLMA) having trained with Integrated Movement Studies (IMS). Improvisation is radical presence

Here and now in each moment, we respond to our internal and external environment.  CI is a specific experiment of connection in which two or more dancers stay in physical contact with each other as they move.  With practice and experience CI can include dramatic merging of kinesthetic fields that produces acrobatic lifts and rolls, yet the improvisational nature of the form makes every dance unique and authentic to the skills and interactions between individuals.  Begun by choreographer Steve Paxton in 1972, the form has spread from the artistic and academic world of dance to the point that it now can be found at ecstatic dances and music festivals.  The fundamental practices of CI include non-grasping, and sovereign self-care.  I teach CI from a particularly social point-of-view, exploring issues of consent and co-creation through our bodies.  As such, I believe contact and interaction in our energetic fields is more important than physical contact.
